DESCRIPTION:Join us for a hands-on restoration work party at Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve in support of our Biodiversity Program. Volunteers will help restore this unique prairie ecosystem by moving branches and creating debris piles to clear and protect the iconic mounds. \nThis is a great opportunity to support local conservation efforts while spending time outdoors with a community of volunteers. No experience is necessary -just come prepared with gloves\, sturdy boots\, weather-appropriate clothing\, and water. Snacks will be provided. \nPlease note: exact location details will be shared upon registration\, and we ask that dogs stay home for this event.

SUMMARY:Prairie Appreciation Day 2026
DESCRIPTION:With no admission charge\, explore Glacial Heritage Preserve\, one of the largest remaining remnants of Western Washington’s endangered prairie ecosystem.  Thanks to on-going restoration for over 30 years\, the prairie now looks much the way it may have looked 200 years ago. For up-to-date information about the event: https://www.prairieappreciationday.org/ \nHere are some fun ways you can experience the 1\,020-acre Glacial Heritage Preserve: \nThe Activity Trail\, ~ 1 mile: contains a number of informative stations covering various aspects of our South Sound prairies. The stations have experts to discuss each topic as well as activities for children and the young at heart. Activities may include:  making seed balls and trying your hand at writing with ink made from oak galls.  Talk to experts about birds\, butterflies\, bees\, gardening with native prairie plants\, how fire is used to restore prairies\, and much more.. \nThe Self-Guided Trail\, ~ 4 miles: A good choice for those who just want to absorb the ambiance and peace of the prairies\, this route also includes a cut-off trail for those wishing a shorter walk. The walk takes you past an osprey nest down to an oak savanna bordering the Black River. \nSouth Sound Bird Alliance (formerly Black Hills Audubon Society) is again hosting an early morning bird walk.  With several highly experienced guides\, weather permitting\, over 70 bird species might be identified.  The year-round list is over 90 species!  For more information:  https://southsoundbirds.org/ and            https://www.prairieappreciationday.org/activities/ \nHay Ride.  Take an opportunity to ride around the prairie and associated habitats sitting on a hay bale. \nFood Truck.  As in previous years\, we plan to have an on-site food vendor. Parked vehicle temperatures can quickly elevate\, putting your pet’s life in danger.\nThe terrain at Glacial Heritage Preserve is uneven and hilly. It is not suitable for strollers\, and it is not considered handicapped accessible. An alternative to Glacial Heritage Preserve is Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve.\n\nMima Mounds Natural Area Preserve \nThere is a paved trail ideal for families with toddlers and those who want a less strenuous experience while walking and witnessing the mounds in full flower. This location is fully accessible and includes wheelchair-accessible restrooms at the trailhead. Discover Pass is required. \nDIRECTIONS \nFor Glacial Heritage Preserve and Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve\, Take I-5 to Exit 95. Go west through Littlerock on 128th Ave SW straight through Littlerock (note that the other two directions of traffic at the intersection with Littlerock Rd. do not stop) until you reach a stop sign at the T in the road. \n\nFor Glacial Heritage Preserve turn LEFT at the T onto Mima Rd. Drive south 2.7 miles and turn left at the event sign onto a gravel road. Drive to the gate of Glacial Heritage and follow parking directions.  Please respect the local residents and observe a speed limit of 10 mph on the access road.\nFor Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve\, turn RIGHT at the T onto Waddell Creek Rd. Drive north approximately 0.7 of a mile until you see the event sign. Turn left into Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve. This road does not have a center stripe\, so drive carefully. Please park with care as tour buses will be using the access road.\n\nA Discover Pass is required. \nSigns will be posted on the roadside to both Glacial Heritage Preserve and Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve.

DESCRIPTION:Austin Greene\, Ph.D.\, Lead scientist for Washington Department of Natural Resources\, Aquatic Reserves Program \nApril 30\, 2026 7:00 pm\, Lacey Community Center \n\n\n\n\nAustin Greene leads a team of scientists and technicians working to better understand the unique habitats on eight Aquatic Reserves in Washington and the impacts challenging the future of these ecosystems. In this presentation Austin will highlight some of the new methods being used to study aquatic lands on Reserves including a robotic surface vessel for mapping marine plants\, underwater camera systems\, autonomous reef monitoring structures (ARMS) and more. Preliminary results from select projects will be presented alongside an overview of upcoming research on Aquatic Reserves and the program’s value as a professional development experience for young scientists.

SUMMARY:Olympia Lecture: Guiding Biodiversity Conservation in Washington
DESCRIPTION:Washington’s beautiful landscapes support a tremendous diversity of ecosystems including marine eelgrass beds\, tidepools\, salt marshes\, lowland rainforests\, montane coniferous forests\, subalpine and alpine meadows and parklands\, shrub steppe\, grasslands\, prairies\, sand dunes\, riparian areas\, forested swamps\, vernal pools\, marshes\, fens and bogs. These ecosystems in turn support thousands of species\, some of which are unique to Washington and not found anywhere else on earth. Much of this biodiversity is threatened by changes in land use\, invasive species\, climate change\, and many other factors. \nThis presentation will introduce you to our state’s amazing array of biodiversity\, discuss the stressors that threaten their long-term viability\, and review how the activities of Washington Department of Natural Resources’\, Natural Heritage Program play a critical role for informing and guiding biodiversity conservation in Washington State.

DESCRIPTION:Once a common sight along the Pacific Coast\, sunflower sea stars have been pushed to the brink by sea star wasting disease – triggering cascading impacts on kelp forests as unchecked purple urchins move in. Dr. Jason Hodin of Friday Harbor Laboratories is leading groundbreaking research to understand what went wrong and how recovery might be possible. In this talk\, he’ll share the detective work behind identifying the disease\, the challenges and successes of raising sunflower sea stars in captivity\, and how restoring this important predator could help heal entire coastal ecosystems.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Randell leads the Coastal Climate Resilience (CCR) research program at the Seattle Aquarium\, leveraging small\, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs)\, equipped with cameras\, sensors\, and open-source AI tools\, to conduct high‑resolution video and photo surveys of kelp forests and other benthic habitats in shallow coastal waters (5–40 m depth). The program’s goals are to expand benthic data collection\, efficiently extract ecological data using AI\, integrate ROV data with broader environmental datasets (e.g.\, diver surveys\, drones\, satellites)\, and share all protocols and resources openly to foster collaboration.

SUMMARY:Anacortes Lecture Series: The Secret Lives of Harbor Porpoises
DESCRIPTION:Harbor Porpoises are one of the most abundant marine mammal species in the Salish Sea\, however there is much we don’t know about this often elusive species. Pacific Mammal Research (PacMam) has spent over 10 years conducting behavioral and photo-identification research on Harbor Porpoises to learn more about their behavior\, ecology\, movement patterns\, and more. Did you know that individuals can remain resident in an area\, that they sometimes eat salmon\, or that they wake surf? PacMam is one of the few organizations in the world conducting this type of work on Harbor Porpoises. Dr. Elliser’s talk will help you get to know your cetacean neighbors and learn about the individual lives and behaviors of Harbor Porpoises in the Salish Sea. There is more to them than meets the eye!
