Endangered: The Salish Sea Quilt

A work of art created for the Salish Sea

There are many ways to care for a place you love. For one group of Anacortes artists, it meant creating a work of art.

Endangered: The Salish Sea was designed, pieced, and quilted by Fidalgo Island Quilters, a quilting group with a deep appreciation for the waters and wildlife of our region. Rather than creating a traditional quilt, the artists envisioned this piece as fiber art, a work to be displayed and admired.

The result is a stunning underwater and above-water portrait of the Salish Sea. Orcas move through the open water while harbor seals, sea otters, salmon, and other marine life inhabit the waters below. Along the shoreline and beneath the waves, the piece captures the remarkable diversity of life that makes this place so special—and reminds us of how much there is to protect.

The artists generously donated Endangered: The Salish Sea to Friends of the Salish Sea as a fundraiser for our Stormwater Monitoring Project.

That connection is especially meaningful. Stormwater may not be as visible or dramatic as an orca breaching or a school of salmon moving through the water, but what flows from our streets and communities ultimately reaches the Salish Sea. Through our volunteer Stormwater Monitoring Project, FOSS volunteers monitor stormwater outfalls in communities around Puget Sound, gathering information that helps identify pollution and gives local communities the information they need to protect our shared waters.

Now, this one-of-a-kind work of art can help protect the very ecosystem it celebrates.

By purchasing Endangered: The Salish Sea, you aren’t simply bringing a beautiful piece of local art into your home. You are helping support hands-on monitoring and stewardship of the Salish Sea and carrying forward the generosity of the artists who created it.

We are grateful to the Fidalgo Island Quilters for sharing their remarkable work with us and helping turn their art into action for the Salish Sea.
