  • Stormwater Monitoring – Community science volunteers are at the heart of our stormwater monitoring program. Over 100 trained volunteers collect water samples from municipal stormwater outfalls that discharge into Puget Sound, generating valuable water quality data throughout the year. By sharing these results with local governments and the public, the program helps identify pollution sources and supports efforts to keep the Salish Sea healthy. This program is currently operating in Bellingham, Anacortes, Oak Harbor, Everett, Mukilteo, Edmonds, Shoreline and Poulsbo.
  • Lecture Series – Friends hosts free public lectures featuring regional experts on marine science, wildlife, biodiversity and environmental stewardship. Each winter and spring, lectures are offered in several communities—including Anacortes, Edmonds, and Olympia—bringing engaging science talks to audiences around the Salish Sea.
  • Biodiversity Project – Our mission is to identify, protect, restore, and provide stewardship for important natural ecosystems in Washington State. The project serves as a non-profit partner for management of lands including Natural Areas, Aquatic Reserves, and inventory data managed by the Washington Natural Heritage Program.
  • The Salish Sea Steward Program – Friends offers support to the Skagit Marine Resource Committee’s volunteer training program designed to prepare citizens to participate in a wide range of stewardship and citizen science programs that directly benefit the community.
  • Trail Tales Interpretive Programs: Walk along the Tommy Thompson Trail in Anacortes and you will see 33 interpretive signs, designed and installed by Friends, that highlight the local history, environmental restoration and marine ecosystems. Friends can provide interpretive presentations to groups if arranged in advance.
  • Forage Fish, Intertidal Monitoring, and our new Plastics Education Interpretive Stations – Friends provides outreach and education, as well as, citizen science field work activities in these areas to raise public awareness in a variety of project areas that benefit the health of the Salish Sea.
  • Discovery Passports –Friends sponsors this environmental education activity in support of the annual Fidalgo Bay Day event hosted by Skagit Marine Resources Committee. A fun family-oriented event featuring Discovery Passports engaging families in learning about our marine environment challenges participants to complete passport questions at education stations and then win a prize to recognize their achievement.
