In addition to her research, she has worked with emergency managers at all governmental levels since the late 1990s to develop interagency response plans in the event of volcanic activity. She has experience in responding to volcanic unrest in the Cascades, Alaska, and Caribbean. The Giant Pacific Octopus with Seattle Aquarium's Tim Carpenter: February 21st

The Giant Pacific Octopus is an iconic resident of the Salish Sea and the North Pacific Ocean.  The largest species of octopus on the planet, the GPO is a keystone species in its range, acting as a top predator and a key prey item for many species more familiar to humans, such as sea otters and orcas.  This presentation will bring the audience up to speed on the biology and ecology of GPOs in the Salish sea, their habits and nature, and their role in the ecosystem at large, through facts and anecdotes from a veteran animal care professional and conservation biologist. Tim Carpenter is currently the Director of Animal Operations at the Seattle Aquarium, and has been studying and caring for fish and invertebrates for over 35 years.

Meet The Sounders: Pacific Gray Whales with John Calambokidis: March 21st

John Calambokidis, a founder and research biologist at Cascadia Research, has studied the Eastern North Pacific (ENP) gray whales for most of his career since 1990.  A subgroup of these whales affectionately  known as the Sounders break off their northern migration between Baja California and the Bering and Chukchi Seas to enter Northern Puget Sound to feed on an abundant supply of ghost shrimp in early spring (March-May).  John will present the latest research on the ENP gray whales and how the Sounders may be playing an important role in sustaining the ENP gray whale population. His work has been covered on shows by National Geographic, Discovery Channel and BBC.
